Kipping Pull-up vs The Dead Hang Pull-up

For those that don’t know, a kipping pull-up involves a controlled swing at full extension concerted with a violent knee and hip action that allows force, generated in the core, to aide in the pull from the upper back and arms. Consecutive pull-ups should be performed with little deviation from the original path when the kip is perfected and intentional. The kipping pull-up has been discussed and debated among fitness professionals and trainers since the pull-up has been used in exercise prescription. The dead hang pull-up is largely favored by the body building community for its muscle-building ability; kipping is generally regarded as “cheating”. Though the dead-hang pull-up does have its benefits, I find it strange that only in the pull-up has a more efficient movement been considered the easy way out.

Lets consider the three variations of the press. The least efficient of the three is the shoulder press. It relies solely on upper body strength. The push press allows the experienced lifter to increase the weight lifted overhead by about 25%. This is largely due to the quick  knee and hip drive performed to initiate the movement. The most efficient of the presses is of course the push jerk. It again allows the experienced lifter to lift about 25% more than in the push press. The later two of these press variations have never been regarded as cheating in the athletic community but are known to increase one’s power and athleticism. Though the less efficient lifts, the strict pull-up and the shoulder press, have their place, they lack the functionality of their counterparts.
